Why This Matters Now

In spring 2025, a ten year old girl disappeared from a migrant community just down the road from the Baja Community Center.

For nearly a week, her family, neighbors, volunteers, and authorities searched for her.

She was eventually found near a small lagoon—a place where she and her siblings would go to play, fish, and bathe.

She never made it home.

Her story has stayed with us.

Because no child should be left alone.

No child should have to wonder where their next meal will come from.

No child should be without care when they’re sick.

And no child should lack a safe place where people know their name, notice when they’re missing, and remind them that they matter.

We cannot say what would have changed her story.

But we can decide what we do next.

Just down the road, we have an opportunity to create something this community desperately needs: a permanent place for children and families to gather, eat, learn, receive support, and build relationships with people who are there everyday.

That’s why we’re building the Baja Community Center.

Not simply another building.

A place to belong.

A place to be known.

A place where a community can wrap its arms around its children.
